The Truth Behind Laxatives and Weight Loss

Among the currently popular weight management strategies is to associate laxatives and weight loss. The idea that laxatives can be used to reduce the amount of food retained by the body has an apparent straight-forwardness to it that makes it very appealing to many people. Those who have been struggling with weight gain and are looking for any and all ideas out there to deal with the issue are particularly susceptible to this idea. So, the question is, is it a good idea to use laxatives to control weight?

It helps to understand how laxatives work to know if this is a truly effective plan. Laxatives are used to stimulate bowel movement and are intended to be used by people who suffer from constipation.  There are natural and synthetically produced laxatives which are meant to aid the human body stay on a regular schedule to rid the body of human waste. Laxatives do not decide what the body is to reject but facilitates the removal of what the body has already chosen to not absorb. Given that this is the function of laxatives, what is the connection between laxatives and weight loss?

The argument being made for this connection is that laxatives help the body process food and waste removal in a quicker cycle thereby reducing the risk of food, and importantly fat, absorption. It is attractive to believe that somehow laxatives can accelerate fat removal but there is little reason to believe that they can perform this function.

Other than the fact that there is no direct proof of the effectiveness of laxatives in dealing with obesity, it is also important to note that indiscriminate use of laxatives can actually harm the body. For example some of the popular laxatives marketed as effective weight loss aids in the market are herbal teas. It is easy to consume a couple of cups of tea during the work day believing that one is not truly doing anything harmful. However, this can lead to the body losing essential fluids and can cause dehydration. Moreover, using laxatives when the body is functioning normally, according to its natural cycle, can lead to the diarrhea and stomach cramps. There is the danger that the body will be denied essential nutrients and this can lead to serious long-term health troubles. The other very real risk is that frequent use of laxatives can make the body dependent on stimulants to perform normal functions. This can reduce the capacity of the body and can make a person vulnerable to other kinds of trouble with the digestive tract and potentially other organs also can also be left without the right protection.

The truth is there is no easy short-cut to weight loss. It is a matter of managing body metabolism and every one of us should educate ourselves about how our body processes the food we consume. A good balanced diet and exercise are the only sure fire ways to manage a healthy body weight. Most other over-night success ideas are to be viewed with some skepticism as there is the danger that the weight that is lost can also be regained in a hurry by the body.

The answer to the question about laxatives and weight loss is that while it may produce some short-term results but it is not a sustainable weight management program. The human body is a complex machine and needs to be treated with care and with awareness of consequences, is a truth worth mentioning in this context. It is important to talk the idea over with a medical professional and get his or her guidance before deciding whether it is okay for any given person to even try out the idea.
